3,072 wildfires caused 10 deaths, destroyed 342 homes, forced the evacuation of nearly 100,000 people, the rescue of 1400 animals and scorched 915,000 acres in Colorado last year. Insurance companies expect to pay a record $80 million dollars for the destruction caused in 2002 quadrupling the previous record.
Flames roar down a hillside toward unprotected homes as the Valley Fire erupts a mile from the Missionary Ridge Fire near Durango. The new Fire sent Fire fighters scrambling from one fire to the other. Eleven homes were lost in the first 4 hours.
